Google Algorithm Update: Have You Heard About Google Penguin?

Google Algorithm Update: Have You Heard About Google Penguin?

Have you heard? The Google algorithm update known as ‘Google Penguin‘ took affect on the 24th April 2012. It was bad enough when they implemented Google Panda the last major algorithm change back in November 2011.

This has affected many, many websites including some of my own and OH boy! it’s back to revamping my SEO strategy; as if I hadn’t got enough to do already!Google algorithm updateDon’t get me wrong, I’m all for change and for the positive reasons, I support Google’s approach. However, if you like me who has a genuine niche website or two and has been affected (just check your Google Analytics for traffic over the last month) then Google have penalised us unfairly.

So what can we do about it? Well Continue reading

H1 Heading Tag: Should You Use More Than One H1 Heading Tag?

H1 Heading Tag: Should You Use More Than One H1 Heading Tag?

Take a look at this 1 minute video about the H1 heading tag from Matt Cutts (at Google) answering another question about Google practices and whether you should or can use the H1 heading tag more than once.

H1 Heading Tag: Should You Use More Than One H1 Heading Tag?

The important thing to remember is that not just Google but other search engine algorithms like the natural feel of content more than formatting and using keyword densities. In other words, keep the blog or article relevant and important to the niche and use the H1 heading tag probably just the once and a supporting H2 heading tag should you require a second (sub) title.

You could of course extend this to one H3 heading tag too but it’s not considered a top level qualifier for SEO (search engine organisation).h1 heading tag

How many H1 heading tags do you use? What are your experiences or knowledge about using the H1 heading tag?

What Is A Good Click Through Rate? Why Bother With Finding Keyword Phrases?

What Is A Good Click Through Rate? Why Bother With Finding Keyword Phrases?

CTR or Click Through Rate is a simple measure from a back-link provided on an external website that navigates you to your own website (or blog site). The following article which talks about What is a good click through rate will shed some light on this important topic and why you should keep an eye out for this wherever you publish content.

What is a good click through rateWhat Are Click Through Rates and Why Do They Matter?

Click through rates, or CTRs, are an important measurement when it comes to search engine optimisation. They matter because they give a good indication of how relevant and valuable your content and adverts are seen to be by users searching for certain terms; more importantly, they represent the percentage of search users who end up at your site. The click through rate is the number of times your web page is selected by a search user, expressed as a proportion of the number of impressions (i.e. views) of your web page’s search entry. Click through rate = clicks/impressions. In other words, if your web page is displayed in the search results 5000 times but clicked on 5 times, your CTR will be 5/5000 (or 1/1000, or 0.1%).

In the keyword selection process of a search marketing campaign, knowing the relevant CTRs can help you to determine the potential value of getting ranked for a certain key term. For example, knowing that a competitor has a click through rate of 50% for a given search term means that internet users searching that term found his or her web page highly relevant. Your business Continue reading

Marketing An eBook: Discover Some Strategies To Publish And Sell Your eBook

Marketing An eBook: Discover Some Strategies To Publish And Sell Your eBook

Now that you have spent many hours, poured your heart into creating your first eBook and finally uploaded it and published to the world, how do you go about marketing an eBook?

Well, to start with and to save me some time creating a tutorial for you, I found this video on YouTube where the author does a good job identifying some key pointers to marketing an eBook - check it out…

Marketing An eBook: Discover Some Strategies To Publish And Sell Your eBook

This video tutorial gives you a great start and I have listed the key points plus added a couple of my own to get you started and investigate which one or more you are going to pursue:

  1. Social Media Marketing (Facebook, Twitter, Digg and YouTube).
  2. For businesses in particular, LinkedIn is a must.
  3. Article marketing (EzineArticles is my first choice).
  4. Online advertising (Google Adwords - PPC, Facebook adverts).
  5. SEO (organic searching from a search engine).
  6. JV (Joint Venture with a well-known authority).
  7. Teleseminars / Webinars (offering a free or special offer - discounted for the event).
  8. Get a write up from another online authority promoting your eBook.
  9. Offline live events (arrange to present and promote your niche).
  10. Be interviewed.
  11. Tell a friend, email your contacts.
  12. Interact with forums and discussion groups (leaving a backlink).

marketing an ebookThe key point mentioned in the video is not to give up at the first attempt to offer your eBook, build a list and have an opt-in, provide a free article and then point them to your offer page.

There is of course a fine balance between over stating the sales offer and being too aggressive versus the softly, softly approach of the ‘light-sale’. Marketing an eBook is not difficult, just requires some time, creativity and belief!

Do you have other ways to market an eBook that you would like to share in this post - please reply below.

Google Synonyms: Finding Keyword Phrases Alternative Research

Google Synonyms: Finding Keyword Phrases Alternative Research

There are many ways to research keyword phrases and one technique often overlooked are Google synonyms. There is a quick and easy way to collect ideas to find the sweet spot keyword phrases that not many people use and therefore leverage traffic to their website.

The simple character ~ (tilde) can be applied to Google search engine with a broad keyword to find Google synonyms of the keyword and expand your awareness to further keyword research.

Google Synonyms: Finding Keyword Phrases Alternative Research

Google synonyms based search algorithms help researchers to get the right results they expect and avoid silly unrelated keyword alternatives but its not perfect.

Here’s an example of how to use the ~ (tilder) character if I wanted to find alternatives to the broad keyword ‘Education’.google synonymsBy typing “~education” into the Google search, it returns other related keyword phrases like “teaching”, “learning”, “schools” as well as education.

Once you have mastered how this works, expand the broad terms into narrower terms (longer tailed keyword phrases) and rinse and repeat.

You now have the basis to take a collection of alternative keyword phrases to find the sweet spots and optimise.

You can also use the following link for dedicated Google synonyms. it’s called Synonym Search Tool Using Goolge.
